With Spring came the start of art fair season. Rob and I hopped aboard Georgie Boy the giant RV and headed up to Seattle for the Best of the Northwest show. Ollie and Ratty came along for the ride and cuddled up to keep us warm on the chilly chilly nights. The show was held at Pier 91, a beautiful venue. Really nice show director with an adorable family. This is the first spring they've had the show at Pier 91, so it may take awhile for patrons to catch on to the location, but it was a lovely show with many wonderful artists. The biggest surprise to me: there were FIVE doll artists! They even listed us in the program as a category unto ourselves!
Prior to the show there was a lot of communication regarding having flame retardant curtains in our booths - I went hyper vigilant on this, buying really expensive certified fabric to make new curtains, and didn't bring my usual set-up. I went frantic trying to dress my booth - it turned out that I didn't buy ENOUGH of that fabric, and things were getting ugly! Thankfully Robbie came up with a way to hang a curtain across the middle of the booth and made things look a lot better. This created a shortened booth with everything up front, AND a back room for storage. I thought that was pretty cool, plus it solved the problem of people not walking INTO the booth - everything was right there for them to see as they walked down the aisle. I kind of like that!
Most popular item in my booth: definitely PIRATES!!! From their eye patches all the way to the tip of their peg legs, these little buccaneers were stealing hearts across the seven seas.
Well, that was two weekends ago. This past weekend I took a Junker Jane monster doll class! Catherine Zaccharino, aka Junker Jane, generously shared her secrets for her adorable little monsters. The class was held at Hot Lips Pizza on Hawthorne. Catherine and her husband Nick got us started before class with Portland favorite Voodoo donuts!
Class begins. Catherine brought her own sewing machine along to give demonstrations. Husband Nick keeps an eye on things.
Catherine also brought her own inspiration boards and plenty of her monster dolls for inspiration.
Fabulous Junker Jane creepy monster dolls!
I got busy sewing, working on my spin for the fabric collage doll.
I decided to make a double sided doll - she has a different side and dress on each side, but the same arms and legs. How do you like her pantaloons?
Catherine demonstated another technique to further monster-fy our dolls.

And now for show and tell! Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you 11-year-old Jackson Sargent, who knows his way around a sewing machine - a Bernina, no less! He signed up for the class with his mom, and made this most amazing monster! I predict we will all be hearing his name in the future as a famous designer!
A close-up of Jackson's doll.
Lorraine's sister Delcia made this guy - I thing he looks like a punk businessman with his studded collar and necktie! LOVE the fabric he's wearing, too!
Jackson's monster with mom Kim's. Don't they look great together with that touch of blue!
My friend Patti's adorable monster. I LOVE it!
Those eyes! Those pointy little teeth!
Along with my double sided doll I made this little bug. Nick said, "It's so Lulu!: Must be those flowery antennae! Here it is before it got its sparkle eyes.
Class photo! Such an adorable bunch. I want to make more!!!
Finally, here's a special announcement about my Etsy shop: It's April! Time for a birthday sale, all month long! I hope you'll stop by and check it out - a big 40% off of everything! Enjoy!

After the dolls were all stitched up, they took a "mud" bath to get that aged look. Here they are blowing in the wind to get dry while we munched on pizza from Hot Lips.
It's always fun to get up and see what everyone else is working on, and always amazing to see how students get inspired in their own way!
